Project Title: Citizen Journalist Project Ruby – The impact of Technology
-
Sypnosis:
-
A personal video blog reporting about the impact technology has in the lives of people with four technological examples.
-
Initial Aims for the Project:
-
I aimed to produce a personal video blog, with a ‘live’ style of reporting, with similarity to how a news show or segment would look like. This illustrates the topic of Citizen Journalism, which allows citizens to be a (re)source of journalism to the masses, in the mass media. The participation of citizens in this area provides information that is easily accessible, portrays perspectives from the ‘other’ side, meaning the citizen themselves and may perhaps be biased. My blog was to be a video blog about how technology impacts the lives of people in the 21st century and it came from my perspective and personal experience. The project was aimed to focus on particular types of technology commonly used by individuals, even though there are many varieties of other technological gadgets around. Thus, aiming to just focus on Electronic Books, Computers, Mobile Phones and Portable Gaming Consoles, I reported what I thought would be relevant to the subject topic, utilising myself as the presenter for my video blog.

Portable gaming consoles provide entertainment to consumers on the go. There are many brands of portable consoles, but we will focus on two main consoles that is popular in 2007, the Nintendo DS Lite and the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Both provide interactivity with regards to the games that require user input, have the ability to support Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and connect wirelessly for multiplayer gaming both locally and over the Internet. The DS Lite can connect wirelessly to a Wii console, which is meant to be used in conjunction with a television for game play. The lower half of the DS Lite has a touch screen that enables the user input, as opposed to a PSP that only has buttons.

The mobile phone originated from the invention created by Alexander Graham Bell, the telephone. It is a wireless, portable device used for mobile communication. In the early development of the mobile phone, only voice transmission was available, like a normal land line telephone. However, mobile phones today have many other additional functions such as short message service that is text only (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to send and receive images and video clips.
The positive side of this technological device is that it creates a closer social network and accessibility around the world. Distance is no longer a factor when calling a loved one overseas via a mobile phone and communication is instantaneous. Sending images, which were taken with the in-built camera functions of the phone via MMS, can be done in real time. Impromptu outings are possible, by simply calling interested parties on the go.

The invention of the computer has created an important method of how people communicate. Before the invention of the computer and the internet, there were typewriters and were the method of correspondence, via printed letters that would still have to be mailed via the postal service. Handwritten letters were going to be a thing of the past. With the advancement of the computer, software was developed; such as instant messaging, individual virtual folders for document archives on a virtual hard disk and for purposes of image manipulation. Anything that was physical could be converted into a virtual representation of the original. E.g. Printed texts could be scanned as an image or text file for access to students around the world.

The Impact of Technology – Books vs. Electronic Books
Communication between people has been made more efficient with the use and advancement of technology. From primitive communication methods such as markings on the ground to advanced, fast electronic emails, technology has allowed human beings communicate to each other efficiently, thus creating a perception that the world has become smaller.
My Video blog will be exploring the different types of technology currently in use by society in the 21st century, such as electronic books, computers, mobile phones, and gaming consoles with internet accessibility; as well as its impact in society.
