Olivia's Proposal - Masquerades in a Made-Up World: Identity in Cyberspace

Olivia Toh 10427597

Synopsis:

This project will explore the concept of identity and the way in which the Internet allows for its manipulation.

Description:

The non-existence of the physical body in cyberspace allows users the possibility to create a new identity for themselves. This is particularly evident in online gaming communities, but also to a lesser extent in social networking sites such as myspace. This project is interested in the abstract notion of the absence of the body, and what it entails for the concept of identity, which is often thought of as something constant and permanent.

Miyuki's Proposal : Travel + Technology: A New Era of Voyage

Synopsis

In the age of heightened technology, travel has never been easier or more convenient than it is now. From organizing your itinerary and booking your trip, to documenting and sharing your experiences with others, advancements in technology have changed the face of travel.

Detail

Travel and technology have become synonymous with one another as more and more people discover the convenience and benefits of combining travel with the internet and other gadgetry that we have at our disposal. In each of my episodes I plan to present the different programs and technology that can be used from planning your trip, to staying in touch with friends and family (and often strangers too). The key focus of my blog posts will be to explore the ways in which travel has changed over the past few years and what this means for travelers and the future of travel.

Amy's Proposal: PROJECT TITLE: Vlogivists

CONTENT DESCRIPTION & FORMAT:

I was inspired by the following quote from Howard-Spink’s (2004) discussion of Grey Tuesday to explore the issue of political activism and vlogs:

“To what extent does the Internet create or not create activist opportunities?”

This project will be presented in the form of a video blog or “vlog” in a series of four episodes. Each episode will contain excerpts from videos available on websites such as YouTube, Google and Yahoo, still images, as well as video footage that I have recorded using a webcamera and/or digital video camera, and arranged using Flash software.

The Internet’s Adventures in Wonderland

The Internet’s Adventures in Wonderland:

The idea for this digital project is loosely based on Alice in Wonderland and its principle theme of a fantasy realm verses reality. Encompassing the theme of Alice and Wonderland, this digital project will broadly question the fantasies and realities of the Internet, looking closely at online communities- examining issues and debates that have arisen due to the popularity of this social phenomenon.

Welcome to iGeneration 2007!

We have a new gang of intrepid boggers beginning their projects next week.

Best of iGeneration 2006

iGeneration 2006 has come to a close and the unit will not be running again until semester 2, 2007.

I thought it would be good to maintain the site with the front page showing the "best of" videoblogs by students. For security reasons we'll have to terminate access now that the new year has begun (a regrettable but unavoidable decision) - so I hope that the site will remain of interest to former students, their friends and families - not to mention academic colleagues who may be contemplating something similar. It has been enormously successful and the sense of community that developed was quite unique - fascinating to participate in - and I trust that there will now be a budding population of vloggers from the group!

So here it is: the "best of" - this is mainly my selection - informed by an informal vote that the group held in our last meeting in 2006. You'll be able to find all posts via links in the left sidebar - check out "All Video Blogs" and "All Blogs" - the next development I'm looking into is enabling links to individual student's vlogs, so that it is easier to navigate through the content - oh for a good taxonomy! Have fun Eye-wink

The BEST (maybe) of iGeneration 2006 (in no particular order)

The End of iGeneration 2006, Happy Holidays, and 2007!

Clearly, iGeneration 2006 has drawn to a close - and by all accounts a highly successful and interesting course - that ran remarkably well using Drupal. I even received a $2000 grant to develop the system a bit more - not much, be enough to do a bit of work on the underlying programming and to add a few new features. What I plan to do is to migrate all the 2006 student accounts to some sort of archive and then open up a 2007 section for the new semester 2 students this year.

I'll leave the site open to former students for the time being, as there is still some enthusiasm to contribute - and we did develop a real sense of community.

Cheer up

FAST FOOD, CONFECTIONERY AND HEALTH

THEME: Along with the explosion of industrial development, fast food and confectionery have been popular all over the world. More importantly, they have caused changes of people's eating habits. There is a tendency in eating more fast food like hamburgers, fried chicken and fried potatoes or pizzas, etc than main meals which are usually time-consuming to cook. Because of the variety of shapes, beautiful wraps, sweet taste and explosion of flavors, confectionery like candy, cake, chocolate and ice cream easily make people get addicted to them. Overall, rate of eating fast food and sweet snacks have been increasing since the 20th century. That causes the risk of two diseases related to those types of food: obesity and diabetes. That is also the reason for my vlogs. We should eat them in limit to protect ourselves from dangerous diseases.
