TITLE: ONE WAY TICKET

SYNOPSIS: ONE WAY TICKET is a documentary (or webumentary) which explains the reasons of why foreigners are here in Perth, WA. Hence, this webumentary is to explore and find real answers from the interviewee based on real life experiences and how they feel about Perth.

INITIAL AIM

1] To provide real life information on Perth and interesting places around the city.

2] To create a series of video blogs, promoting Perth as the ideal place not only to visit but also to work, to migrate, to run a business, to study and also for spirituality. Each of the vlogs provides different aspects and reasons for being in Perth. In short, the entire episodes should provide a variety of online information about Perth.

Rommy's critical analysis - Expression vs Perception : Graffiti

Expression vs Perception: Graffiti
Is graffiti art or vandalism?

SYNOPSIS:
People have a desire to express themselves through many different ways to reflect their individualities. It might be through how they dress, where they hang out, how they speak and so on. However, some of them might choose to mark or scratch our environment, writing words, decorating walls, houses, cars, etc in order to express their feelings such as hate, love, care and so on. This is what we call graffiti. In modern art, graffiti is one of very contemporary forms of expression. A piece of graffiti nowadays might provoke any manner of response such as interest, disgust, amusement, anger, etc. One thing the most engaging things about graffiti is that it is unedited forms of art and it is different from any other forms of media. This is also what we call the voice of world around us.

Liana's critical analysis

The aim of my project was to find ways of having a break from my thesis, by testing out a range of individual, inexpensive physical and mental activities. My initial aim was to prove that simple, inexpensive tasks are a good avenue for relieving stress. The challenge was to make the vlogs informative, but also entertaining and interesting.

Conceptual issues:

My vlog was loosely based on a documentary style. A documentary is defined as a text that aims to document reality in their depiction of people, events and places. Documentary characteristics include: basing the information on facts, having a point of view, but not trying to overly persuade the viewer, engaging the audience with a variety of media such as narrations, interviews, text, music, photographs and/or dramatisations, and being compelling and entertaining. A documentary should not rely on rumours or unreliable sources of information. A difficulty with the documentary genre is that the text is meant to be objective. However, documentary texts are often constructed from a particular moral or political perspective, and therefore cannot claim to be objective. Decisions made in post-production mean that reality is edited, re-sequenced and artificially framed. Also contradicting the idea of 'objectivity,' is the rise in popularity of polemic texts such as Bowling for Columbine, which attempts to persuade the audience into a specific set of opinions. Within the documentary genre there are various types, such as the observational versus fully scripted form, and hybrids such as programs which combine re-enactments and interviews. This highlights some of the difficulties involved in attempting to define the genre. As a result, the definition of a documentary is often referred to as a term of art, rather than a exact description.

Jay's critical analysis - Two Wheels, No Engine

I decided to focus this vlog on my passion for cycling. I chose to make my vlog a personal one, rather than having any political angle. However, there were a number of aspects of filming and the brainstorming of ideas for each episode that required me to consider some of the conceptual elements of vlogging. For instance, in order to make this vlog interesting, I recognised that I could not merely film myself riding around Perth in every episode. Instead, I would have to make each episode unique and explore different aspects of my passion for cycling.

I used my own digital camera to film each vlog, as most vloggers do. There is no great significance put on production values in vlogging, partly because most vlogs are filmed individually and relatively spontaneously. Moreover, due to the fact that they are posted on the Internet for streaming, greater emphasis is put on compression and constant updating – thus, the lower level of film quality – than spending labour and resources on producing a visually rich and high quality piece of work. Rather, vlogs can be made by anyone, including me. This is what I found attractive about our assigned task for this unit, and the fact that to simply say something is to vlog; that there are no hard and fast rules or conventions in this new form of communication, as compared to relatively traditional modes, such as films TV or the cinema. As Miliard (2005) states:

paracritical interfaces

Title: Paracritical interfaces.

My video blogs intended to weave between and through the margins of (un)conventional vlogging. They explore their potential to be a playful medium which can utilise as well as diverge from visual conventions that were established by film and television. Hence, they are a paracritical exploration of interfacing, interactivity, and storytelling.
